The brief
A family from Lisbon wanted a weekend house that would feel calm in August heat and warm in January rain, built around the olive tree that already stood on the plot.

The approach
We wrapped four low wings around a courtyard so every room looks onto the tree. Thick limewashed walls hold the cool of the night, and deep roof overhangs keep the summer sun off the glass.

The outcome
The house needs no air conditioning in summer. Rooms are arranged by the movement of the sun: breakfast faces east, the living room catches the last light over the courtyard.
