The brief
Turn a tired nineteenth century townhouse in Chiado into a 42 room hotel without losing the stair, the ceilings or the sense of a private house.

The approach
We kept the original stone stair as the spine of the building and placed the guest rooms around it in quiet travertine and oak. Public rooms on the ground floor open fully to the street in good weather.

The outcome
Guests describe it as staying in a friend’s house. The restored ceilings and stair now carry the hotel’s identity, with new pieces that stay in the background.
